“O Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!”
Church of the Ascension is devoted to loving God and loving our neighbors, and those neighbors includes the college students of Oakland. Through our partnership with the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO) and our team of campus ministry staff, Ascension’s Undergraduate Campus Ministry, VENITE, is committed to seeing this generation of college students transformed by Christ to transform the world for Christ. Venite invites college students into a deeper understanding of the Gospel, a broader vision of God’s Kingdom, and richer relationships within the diversity of Christ’s body at Church of the Ascension and beyond.

Venite Undergarduate Ministry begins again September 1, 2021. Starting on September 1, we’ll be meeting every Wednesday from 6:30 – 8:30pm at Church of the Ascension. Interested? Email Leah Hornfeck or text her at 724-630-0167.

Graduate Student Ministry: Ora et Labora
It’s late Monday evening and in Room 105 a handful of students are diligently working away. A few are seated together at the table rapidly typing, surrounded by books. Others on the couches quietly flipping through research. The room is full of the soft light of the lamps and the blue screens, the sounds of clattering of keys and the smell of coffee. At 9:30pm, there is a shift as typing stops and red books are slid across the table. Softly, the group begins to intone, “The Lord Almighty grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end…”
This is Ora et Labora. Borrowing from the old motto of the Benedictine monks, “prayer and work” this is a time for graduate students to gather in community as they labor alongside one another and approach God together. Through this time, we want to encourage a sense of joy in our vocations and acknowledge God as the center and source of our being. Ora et Labora will be on Mondays from 7 – 10pm starting September 13, 2021. Come join us! Interested? Email Chris Kirkland or text him at 412-716-1617.
Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA)
In 2021 Ascension introduced Chris Kirkland as our staff member for Graduate Student Ministry and entered into an exciting new partnership with the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA). The CMDA is a national network created to help support medical and dental students and professionals in their walk with Christ and to train them to use their talents for furthering the Kingdom of God. Chris is getting our Graduate Student Ministry into shape so that those doing advanced degrees in Pittsburgh can have a church home and plenty of support during this challenging phase of their lives. Please reach out to him to get connected to CMDA or Ascension’s graduate student group (contact info below).
