Small Groups

WHY SMALL GROUPS?

A small group can make a big, big difference in your walk with God.  There are things that God can work into us in the company of a small, committed group of brothers and sisters that He cannot (or simply does not) work into us any other way.  Solo time with God is critical.  Public worship with the larger body of believers is equally critical.  Many, if not most, of us at Ascension are doing pretty well on those two fronts.  However, many of us may be missing what He could do in us if we were part of a small group.

Many Christian leaders have emphasized the importance of, “the one, the few and the many”.  We all need “the one”--that is, our alone time with God; “the few”-- a small group to support, encourage and challenge us; and “the many”--regular public worship with the larger, local body of believers.

Small groups, “the few”, are essential for the vitality of any church family, but as churches grow in size, small groups become critical.  Small groups are essential for sustaining growth because they create a place for newcomers to plug in and belong.  They are essential for meeting the immediate pastoral needs of church members.  If you have just had a baby, been hospitalized or need to move, it is so nice to have a group of brothers and sisters who will be there for you on a moment’s notice!  In addition, small groups can challenge the status quo of our spiritual growth because they are safe places to share and to ask for help or accountability for change.

Church of the Ascension's Vision for Small Group Ministry
  • Small Groups build life-changing relationships that are instrumental in transforming us into the likeness of Jesus. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed…” Romans 12:2
  • Small Groups build safe relationships of laughter, caring, and understanding.  “Love one another with brotherly affection.  Outdo one another in showing honor.”  Romans 12:10
  • Small Groups study Scripture and encourage each of us to conform our lives to it.  “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only…” James 1:22
  • Small Groups speak the truth graciously and shun gossip and resentments. “Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ…”  Ephesians 4:15
  • Small Groups minister and serve together in the church and the world. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another…”  Hebrews 10:24-25
